Your river day

Three questions, in order

Where will you launch, where might you stop, and what do you need to confirm first? Our summaries come from the destinations' own pages.

  1. 1 · Launch

    Pirate Cove Resort

The resort describes a seven-lane launch ramp for boats, jet skis and other water vessels, near Needles, California.

    • Ask about park entry and launch fees.
    • Ask about trailer parking, ramp conditions and vessel restrictions.

  2. 2 · Slips and fuel

    Pirate Cove marina

The resort lists a marina with slips and a fuel dock. Arrange a slip directly before arriving, and confirm current fuel access and rates.

  3. 3 · A riverside meal

    Topock 66

A riverfront restaurant, bar and marina stop on Historic Route 66. Contact them about docking plans and fuel. We do not assume launch, fuel or rental services there.

Pre-launch essentials

A short list, not a substitute for official rules.

  1. Life jackets for everyone

Bring a properly fitting life jacket for each person aboard, including kids, and check current Arizona and California rules for your vessel.

  2. Weather and current conditions

Check the forecast and official river advisories the morning you go. Conditions change, so leave room to shorten or cancel the day.

  3. Launch and trailer parking

Confirm ramp access, trailer parking and any vessel restrictions directly before you hitch up. Allow extra time on busy weekends.

  4. Water, shade and sun protection

Pack more drinking water than you expect to need, plus sunscreen, hats and a dry change of clothes. Plan breaks out of the heat.

  5. A plan for the return

Tell someone your route and rough return time, secure loose gear, and settle back at the house with time to rinse and stow equipment.
